Reynolds Honors pupil Johana Aguero has big dreams for her future, together with her alternative into the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars programme brought her ane measuring closer to realizing those dreams.
The programme gives STEM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering together with Math) community college students interested inward NASA related careers an chance to participate inward a five-week online learning experience. The overstep scoring scholars are afterwards invited to attend a 4 hateful solar daytime workshop at a NASA Center.
“I ever knew I wanted to operate for NASA; contribute to the STEM lodge together with endure out my score inward history. However, it wasn’t until later inward 2015 that I genuinely constitute my niche – engineering. Then it only made sense to me to direct aerospace engineering.”
Aguero was ane of most 400 students who participated inward the five-week online course of didactics June 27 through August 3. Based on her scores, she was ane of only xl students invited to participate inward the 4 hateful solar daytime workshop at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center inward Florida inward belatedly October.
At the Kennedy Space Center the students worked on projects mentored past times NASA engineers, attended briefings past times engineers together with scientists, toured NASA facilities, together with participated inward a Mars rover competition. The grouping was divided into 4 teams of 10. Each squad had to design, build, together with exam a Mars rover, operating inside budget constraints. At the goal of the contest the teams were judged together with scored after presenting their results. Aguero’s squad finished inward minute place, barely missing out on overstep honors.
The students too had the chance to run into engineers who worked on the shuttle programme together with infinite shuttle Columbia equally good equally the manager of the Kennedy Space Center together with four-time astronaut Rob Cabana.
Aguero said, “This whole sense was invaluable exposure. I tin immediately visualize just what I’m working towards. My dream is to operate for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center.”
H5N1 electrical flow Reynolds Honors student, Aguero expects to graduate inward May 2018 together with plans to transfer to the University of Virginia to report aerospace engineering.
